These non-corrective lenses, which are designed only to change the appearance of the eyes, are easily accessible to consumers and are especially popular around Halloween.

Federal law requires the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate decorative lenses as a medical device, similar to corrective lenses; however, decorative lenses continue to be illegally marketed and distributed directly to consumers through a variety of sources including flea markets, the Internet, beauty salons and convenience stores.

• Remind children to stay together in a group with at least one adult chaperone.
• Be sure children are aware of the potential dangers from strangers, and remind them to stay in familiar areas.
• Avoid masks that block children's vision and costumes that could cause them to trip, such as baggy pants and high heels.
• Make sure costume fabrics and accessories are made of flame-resistant materials, such as nylon or polyester.
• Keep kids away from candlelit Jack-O-Lanterns.
• Inspect all candy before children eat it and dispose of anything not in a sealed wrapper.
• Bring a flashlight while trick-or-treating to increase visibility.
• Costume accessories, such as wands and swords, should be made from safe, flexible materials and not have any sharp edges.

Watch out this Halloween! Not of ghosts and goblins, but of something far more sinister. Before you swap wigs, hats or masks, consider that they could be carrying an undesirable treat. Lice.

In this economy we are all concerned about saving money, and with Halloween coming up, many will think about buying used costumes, masks, hats, or participate to costume swaps.

One thing you might not think about, hiding in an old wig, mask, hat or costume is lice. Yuk. Well, if you have kids, you know there is not one year you don't get a letter from daycare or school about lice spreading across kids heads, and it's not a big deal, it's just 'very' inconvenient.

Just watch out!

This is sadly unfortunate and happens a lot during Halloween. Some online retailers offer very cheaply-made costume and this article is a good reminder that it DOES happen.

A similar experience just happened to us this year and we are in the process of getting the princess costume we ordered back to the online retailer to get it exchanged. The costume we received, although the right size for our daughter, did not seem to fit her as well as on the picture. The back of the dress was shorter than the front and stitches were snapped in a few places...

So here are a couple tips: - if you buy the costume in a store, open the package and look at the costume - if you buy the costume online: buy from an online retailer with good ratings, if you buy from Amazon, buy from a reputable (by ratings) seller and make sure they do offer a return policy. Take pictures, and send email them to the retailer, they might be able to send you a new costume before you ship yours back to them so you can have it on time.

Kids can try on costumes, but have enough "staff" available to supervise to ensure things are hung back up or laid on the right table. Owners can reclaim costumes that are not swapped or donate leftovers to Goodwill. Have a photographer take photos (with parent's written permission) or shoot some video of the event (ditto on the permission).

It could be bad news if you wait too long this year to get your pumpkins for Halloween. An out of the ordinary wet Summer in the NorthEast combined to Hurricane Irene in late August have compromised the growth of pumpkins this year in many farms.

Because of the seasonality and high demand for it, the price of pumpkins this year will sky-rocketed:

The wholesale price for a bin of 32 to 45 pumpkins ranged from $150 to $200 in upstate New York, about twice the normal price, Pray said. It was still unclear how the shortage would affect retail prices, he said, but in a normal year, each pumpkin could sell for up to $15 at a supermarket in a big city like New York.

“Just get your pumpkins early, that’s all I can say,” he said. “It’s going to be a difficult season.”

This is very neat! Not only does it appear that the Kensington palace where Prince William and Kate Middleton live appear to be haunted - which is pretty ghostly to think about - but they know decided to offer an enchanted tour for Halloween. Enchanted or haunted, this will be fabulous for hundreds to thousands of lucky little ones!

The Kensington palace is said to be haunted by the spirit of Queen Mary, William's great-great grandmother.
