How to make a Prince (Purple Rain) costume

It may be 2009, but you can party like it’s 1999 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Purple Rain.” The classic, 1984 film made Prince a household name and mixed MTV-style music video editing with music. The soundtrack to the film was equally as popular and influential as the film.

Prince’s look provided one of the most iconic images of the ’80s and is a great costume with a nostalgic touch. Here’s how to make your own:

##Things You’ll Need##

* Purple Reign wig

* Black eyeliner

* Purple Edwardian jacket

* Lace jabot and cuffs

* White Shirt

* Black pants

* Silver pyramid studs

OR

* panel of Silver sequins

* Silver buttons

* Black high heeled boots

* OPTIONAL – White guitar

* OPTIONAL – Leopard print guitar strap

##Putting together your Prince (Purple Rain) costume##

Step 1: Pick up a Purple Reign wig in the jheri curled, high pompadour style worn by Prince in the film.

Step 2: Line your eyes with black kohl eyeliner on both the inner and outter rims.

Step 3: Put on a white shirt and layer a white lace jabot and cuffs over the neckline and cuffs.

Step 4: Find a purple Edwardian jacket of any fabric either online or in a thrift store. It does not even have to be purple, maybe burgandy.

Step 5: Order loose pyramid studs to press into the jacket on the right hand side of the shoulder. The pyramid studs can be easily adhered to the fabric by folding down the tabs and securing them in place.

OR

For a less heavy, labor intensive look, you can get a bolt of silver sequinned fabric and secure it to the right shoulder of the jacket with fabric glue.

Step 6: Put on a pair of black pants and tuck your white shirt into the waist. You can also decorate the pants with large, silver buttons sewn down the front side of your pants in an asymetrical pattern.

Step 7: Put on a pair of high-heeled men’s boots worn beneath your pants.

Step 8: Grab a white guitar as an optional prop with a leopard print guitar strap.

Step 9: Pucker up with your best pout and prepare to “Go Crazy”!
