The Mayflower is one of the most important ships in American history. It was the ship that transported English Separatists or Pilgrims as we call them to Massachusetts in 1620. It is because of the Pilgrims and Native Americans that we have Thanksgiving every November. To honor our early ancestors and have a bit of fun with a costume party you might consider creating a Mayflower Costume. It will take a bit of work, so getting started now is optimal.
Materials Needed:
Cardboard
Brown Fabric
White Fabric
Rope
Instructions:
Step 1: To begin you will need to find an oblong piece of cardboard and pick up some heavy duty tape. The cardboard will be used to design the ship’s hull. It should have a point bow with a square stern. This means you may have to cut the box to get the right shape or use a couple of boxes. Make sure you use heavy duty cardboard and tape to fashion your boat.
Step 2: In this step you have two options. You can purchase brown fabric at www.joann.com or www.discountfabrics.com to cover the cardboard with. You can also get a can of brown paint that can be used to cover the tape and make the box look like one whole ship. It is up to you and your talents.
Step 3: You will definitely need to buy white fabric or use an old white sheet. The Mayflower as a ship has several sails. You will need a smaller sail for the bow, which also means you need dowels to stick in the cardboard for support. This sail should be low enough to not get in your line of sight. The next sail will be you. You will need to have a white shirt to create the look. A third sail can go on the back of the ship. Refer to photos of the Mayflower to get the right look for all the sails.
Step 4: Lastly you will need to use the rope on the sails. The rope will allow you to show the rigging the ship will have. If you want to get even more technical you can fashion the deck to show the various rigging, poles, cabin, and floor of the boat.
The cardboard will need to have a hole in the center for you to place it on your hips. Use suspenders or ropes to look like rigging in order to hang the ship from your shoulders. Now you are ready to pick up a few Pilgrims to bring to your costume party!
