How to make a Mayflower Costume

vote up  vote down1 up, 0 down

The Mayflower is one of the most important ships in American history. It was the ship that transported English Separatists or Pilgrims as we call them to Massachusetts in 1620. It is because of the Pilgrims and Native Americans that we have Thanksgiving every November. To honor our early ancestors and have a bit of fun with a costume party you might consider creating a Mayflower Costume. It will take a bit of work, so getting started now is optimal.

Materials Needed:

  • Cardboard
  • Brown Fabric
  • White Fabric
  • Rope

Instructions:

Step 1: To begin you will need to find an oblong piece of cardboard and pick up some heavy duty tape. The cardboard will be used to design the ship’s hull. It should have a point bow with a square stern. This means you may have to cut the box to get the right shape or use a couple of boxes. Make sure you use heavy duty cardboard and tape to fashion your boat.

Step 2: In this step you have two options. You can purchase brown fabric at www.joann.com or www.discountfabrics.com to cover the cardboard with. You can also get a can of brown paint that can be used to cover the tape and make the box look like one whole ship. It is up to you and your talents.

Step 3: You will definitely need to buy white fabric or use an old white sheet. The Mayflower as a ship has several sails. You will need a smaller sail for the bow, which also means you need dowels to stick in the cardboard for support. This sail should be low enough to not get in your line of sight. The next sail will be you. You will need to have a white shirt to create the look. A third sail can go on the back of the ship. Refer to photos of the Mayflower to get the right look for all the sails.

Step 4: Lastly you will need to use the rope on the sails. The rope will allow you to show the rigging the ship will have. If you want to get even more technical you can fashion the deck to show the various rigging, poles, cabin, and floor of the boat.

The cardboard will need to have a hole in the center for you to place it on your hips. Use suspenders or ropes to look like rigging in order to hang the ship from your shoulders. Now you are ready to pick up a few Pilgrims to bring to your costume party!

How to Create a Snoopy Pilgrim Costume

vote up  vote down1 up, 0 down

Snoopy is perhaps the most famous dog in cartoon history. Well he is at least one of the most famous since there is Goofy, Pluto, and Clifford to also choose from in that list. However, the point is almost everyone you speak to will know who Snoopy is and even recognize the Thanksgiving Cartoon special that is on ABC every year. This year if you are having a costume party, in honor of Thanksgiving, you might elect to grab a slightly different costume, instead of the same old Pilgrim. Our costume idea is to use Snoopy and make a Pilgrim out of him.

Materials Needed:

  • White and Black Fabric
  • Construction Paper
  • Glue
  • Top Hat
  • Black Shoes
  • Sewing Machine

Instructions:

Step 1: Before constructing a pilgrim you will need to create the Snoopy costume. Begin with a dog pattern and fabric from www.joann.com or www.discountfabric.com. The dog pattern will help you create a jumpsuit complete with paws and hood. You should go for a beagle costume pattern so that you get the Snoopy ears and tail right on the costume.

Step 2: Now that the dog is completed you can begin to add clothing. This is where the black fabric will come in. You have a few options. You can wear black pants, white shirt, and a black dress jacket or you can create a cape out of the black material.

Step 3: With the construction paper and glue you need to fashion three gold buckles: two for shoes and one for the top hat.

Step 4: The dress shoes should be black and mirror the century you are trying to emulate. However, if that isn’t any option go for any dress shoe.

Step 5: The top hat also needs a gold buckle glued to it and once you have that on you are almost ready to go.

Snoopy Pilgrim would not be complete without Woodstock, so do not forget the little guy!

DIY Poison IvyContest Entry

My friend Annabelle made this costume. She took two red wigs and made the "poison ivy cones" with styrofoam cups and lots of bobby pins. She had the green shirt and skirt already. She bought long white gloves and dyed them. She even made ivy-covered knee high boots. She did all her makeup herself and used spirit gum to apply the leaves to her eyebrows.

My friend Annabelle made this costume all by herself! She already had a long red wig, she bought another and made the cones with styrofoam cups and lots of bobby pins. All of us pieced our costumes together from either GoodWill, or searches on Ebay. The only person that actually purchased the costume was our Scooby (Marcus). Fred's costume was all found at Savers, his wig was purchased at a Halloween USA. Shaggy's wig was also purchased at Halloween USA, the rest of his clothes were his own. Velma's came completely from the GoodWill. I was Daphne, and I pieced all my costume together from searches on Ebay. I was really happy how it turned out!

Homemade with goodwill clothes which I distressed and painted to age and gorify, latex prosthetics for my face, contacts for my eyes and lots of blood and gel for my face and hair. Hands were hand painted latex and with blood designed to look rotten and decomposing. A lot of fun, scared most every person I snuck up on, and a few people couldn't even look at me at all, and turned away or ran! LOL!!!

Check out my costume for 2009. Can you find all of Octamom's babies? I had chocolate eyeballs in my VJJ for anyone who was brave enough to put their hand in it. 7 are wrapped up in umbilical cords around my neck. Mike is delivering the eighth. He went as my GYN who was offering Free exams as a part of his Stimulus Package.
