Go, Speed Racer! Go!

The next in a long line of favorite television shows being given the big-screen treatment, the classic Japanese cartoon, Speed Racer is being made into a live-action movie. The film version, starring Emile Hirsch (Lords of Dogtown) as Speed Racer and featuring Christina Ricci, John Goodman, and Susan Sarandon as supporting cast, is slated for a May 2008 release.

Written and directed by the Wachowski brothers who created The Matrix trilogy and also worked on the screen adaptation of Alan Moore’s “V For Vendetta,” this one promises to be action-packed. Already showing hints of the Wachowski brothers’ distinctive style, you can check out the new Speed Racer trailer here.

While no new officially licensed costumes have been released for the new Speed Racer film, there are already existing Speed Racer costumes based on the classic manga/Japanamation franchise. Given the cult status of the cartoon, these are sure to be popular for cosplayers, convention-goers, or even kids at Halloween.

In addition to the hero, Speed Racer himself, there is also his rival, the equally heroic and mysterious Racer X. Ladies may want to dress as the Speed’s spunky love interest, Trixie.

While it’s up in the air as to whether new costumes from the live-action release will be offered, the vintage cartoon-styled ones are sure to be a big hit. You’ll have to pick up your own Chim-Chim monkey pal or Mach 5, though!
