Trekkies and sci-fi fans are Vulcan excited about the new JJ Abrams vision of Star Trek due in theatres on May 8th, 2009.

The film takes a look at the early days of James T. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise and is something of a prequel to the classic 1960s original series created by Gene Roddenberry. All of the major characters from the original series will play a part in the film, although different, more age-appropriate actors will be playing the roles of the younger Spock, Kirk, Bones, Sulu, Uhura, and Scotty. Although Zachary Quinto will be playing the role of young Spock, Leonard Nimoy is scheduled to make an appearance reprising his iconic role.

Additionally, new characters will play a major role in the film, such as Eric Bana's angry (and quite possibly evil) space pirate, Nero.

Fans can take a look at the final trailer for the film here.

You've still got a couple months to brush up on your Klingon dialects and perfect your Vulcan salute as you greet fellow Trekkies with a heartfelt "Live long and prosper". There's also time to pick up some Star Trek costumes or make your own in time for the film's premiere or at any convention on your starship's radar.

Wigs and ears are available to dress up as Spock, as are classic Star Trek uniforms modeled after those shown on the original series. Also, costumes based on the new Nero villain have hit the market.

For those of you who have a Star Fleet badge in DIY crafts, you can make your own Star Trek costumes with the help of some of our Star Trek How To costume tutorials. Dress as your favorite Star Trek character with How To's for main characters like Spock, Scotty, Sulu, and of course, Kirk. Those of you seeking to add someone new to your United Federation of Planets can wow the crowd with a unique DIY Sarek costume and show everyone just who Spock's daddy is!

Live long and prosper, indeed!
