How to make a Tina Turner costume

posted by Lana417 on (6 years, 1 month ago)

From her days with Ike Turner "rolling on the river," to her comeback career with the blockbuster Private Dancer album, Tina Turner is one of rock's most famous females and a true survivor. She's overcome adversity with a still-successful career, and pushing 70, she still has the best pair of legs around... And one of the most powerful voices ever. Dress up as one fierce female with a homemade Tina Turner costume!

Things You'll Need

  • Spikey Tina Turner wig
  • Comb
  • Scissors (optional)
  • Hairspray
  • sequinned or fringed tank dress
  • yard of fringe trim from fabric store (optional)
  • thread or sewing machine (optional)
  • denim jacket
  • pantyhose
  • high heels
  • microphone (optional)
  • blush/bronzer
  • mascara
  • eyeshadow

Putting your Tina Turner costume together

Step 1: The first and most important thing you'll need is a Tina Turner wig. If you can't find a nice, long, spikey wig, then pick up a long, light brown one and doctor it yourself with some scissors, a comb, and hairspray. Cut some bangs and shorter (jaw length and graduatingly shorter pieces) layers on the topmost layer of hair. Back-comb the hair to make it fall in Tina's famous "What's Love Got to Do With It" style and use hairspray to keep it in place.

Step 2: Pick up a cute tankdress with either sequins or fringe. If you can't find a fringed one, get a plain, black tank dress and sew fringe on the top at the neckline and at the bottom hem for a fun effect.

Step 3: Put on your jean jacket for '80s style like Tina in her videos of the era!

Step 4: Nothing beats a great pair of legs. Show off yours with some pantyhose to give them a flattering sheen and high heels to give yourself a sexy curve to your calf muscles.

Step 5: A good makeup job is key! Not all of us have Tina's cheekbones, but they can be achieved through makeup. Suck in your cheekbones and apply blush along your cheekbone and a darker shade of bronzer in the hollows of your cheeks. Blend it a bit so you don't have an obvious line and dab a glimmery white cream or eyeshadow powder along the cheekbone itself to make them stand out. Voila! Instant Tina!
