How to Make a Pocahontas Costume

Pocahontas has the traditional Native American costume we are used to seeing in the movies. You can create the Pocahontas costume with relative simplicity depending on how detailed you would like it to be. The traditional costume has beads worked into the material, but you do not have to get the elaborate, you can use beaded jewelry for the same effect. The instructions are below for a simple costume.

Things You Need: - Brown or yellow material, preferably faux leather. - Leather belt - Beaded jewelry either you create or buy - Leather strips - Feather - Moccasins or leather sandals

Instructions:

Step 1: The dress should be made out of a fabric that simulates leather as that is the true Native American costume. There are patterns you can purchase to get the dress in the exact style or you can create your own. For Pocahontas an ankle length dress with short sleeves is appropriate. This is also the main part of the costume so make sure you create a triangle at the bottom. The top of the dress can be simply rounded or in the same triangle line with short sleeves. The dress does not have much form, but it should fit rather snugly.

Step 2: The leather belt is the next important step. This will give the waist form and complete the dress. The belt can also be used to carry tools like a knife if need be, though Pocahontas did not generally have weapons on her, at least in the Disney movie.

Step 3: This is the accessory stage. In this stage you might consider creating anklets out of the faux leather to accompany the leather moccasins or sandals. You will also need to create the head band. The headband should ring around the head with a feather in the back. If you do not have dark hair now is the time to place the braided wig on and hold it in place with the headband.

Step 4: Adding the beaded jewelry is the final step and if you do not have any, not necessary. The beads just add a little more to the costume you are trying to create, especially a necklace. Pocahontas always wore a necklace in the film.
