Valentine's Day - 02/14/2009
Every February 14th, love is in the air! Named for the Third Century saint who had helped persecuted Christians get married despite explicit orders from the Roman Emperor Claudius II, our modern version of Valentine's Day continues in the tradition of love, lovers, and match-making. Even more ancient elements of deities became incorporated into Valentine's Day, notably the ancient Greek and Roman god, Cupid, the son of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love! Known for shooting his benign arrows into the hearts of mortals, causing them to fall in love, Cupid is a symbol of Valentine's day, often depicted as a cherub with angelic wings and a quiver full of arrows.
Traditionally, people send friends, family, or significant others cards to show their love for them, a practice which stems from a legend associated with St. Valentine. When he was imprisoned centuries ago, it was believed he had fallen in love with a young woman and smuggled out correspondence to her, signing it, "from your Valentine." That tradition continues today, along with sending more elaborate gifts like chocolate candy, flowers, and sometimes jewelry.
