Thanksgiving - 11/27/2008

Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, Thanksgiving commemorates the very first harvest held by the Pilgrims in the New World in the early 1600s.

When the English settlers first arrived, it was the American Indians who helped them to learn how to use the land and its animals and what crops to grow to sufficiently feed themselves to survive. The Native Americans were honored guests at this harvest feast.

One of the few holidays that doesn't revolve around presents, candy, or hardcore partying and merriment, Thanksgiving is a simple holiday reserved for families and friends to examine year that has passed and take a look at all they have to be thankful for. While attending (if you live in New York) or watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on television are more modern traditions, the large family dinner has stayed the same since the days of the early settlers, including most of the food items on the menu.

Foods commonly served at Thanksgiving are stuffing (with any number of tasty fruit and/or meat-based ingredients), sweet potatoes or yams, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes loaded with gravy, corn on the cob, and greens. While the side dishes may vary, usually an overstuffed roasted turkey serves as the main course with a slab of piping hot pumpkin pie with cool whipped cream on top is a favorite desert.
