Oktoberfest - 09/18/2010
Having originated in Germany and surrounding areas like Bavaria and Munich, Oktoberfest is a 16-day celebration beginning on the first Sunday in October. Oktoberfest is the world's largest fair with roughly six million people attending every year. German oom-pah music fills the air with a bouncy, festive beat and people dance in the streets. Although bratwurst and other delicious foods are prepared and eaten throughout Oktoberfest, the main attraction is beer -- and lots of it! A special dark Oktoberfest brew is even prepared for revelers to drink as they enjoy the fruits of fall!
Oktoberfest has found its way Stateside here in America, too. Traditional German costumes like lederhosen for men and St. Pauli Girl-like dresses for women in varying lengths are usually worn, bringing a taste of old world Germany and Bavaria into the 21st century. One of the biggest Oktoberfest celebrations in the United States is held in Cincinnati, OH, however there are also major celebrations in Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, and Denver, among other cities.
