Cinco de Mayo - 05/05/2009
Cinco de Mayo, the Fifth of May, is celebrated in both Mexico and the United States in honor of the Battle of Puebla. The Battle of Puebla was a major victory for Mexican forces in their struggle for independence from French occupation.
Cinco de Mayo is most widely celebrated in the United States, particularly California as a day of pride for those of Mexican heritage -- or even those who just appreciate the contributions Mexican culture has made to our own melting pot. Typically, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with traditional Mexican folk dances with swirling skirts and intricate steps as well as classical Mariachi bands playing flamenco guitar punctuated with violin and trumpets. Additionally, Cinco de Mayo is a field day for others of non-Mexican descent with a run on Margaritas at local bars, parties with Mexican food, and good-time partying in general!
