Betsy Ross mask
Born in 1752, Philadelphia’s Betsy Ross was the seamstress who left her indelible mark on the United States when she designed and stitched the very first American flag. Her ingenious creation incorporated 13 white stars against a blue backdrop, symbolizing the 13 original colonies. While the star count has been upped to 50 today, the seven red and six white stripes total 13, reminding Americans of the original colonies at the nation’s start.
